A day before Aidil Fitri, as well as on the Aidil Fitri itself and few days thereon, I was frequenting the Kota Samarahan-Sadong Jaya Road. This is a nice tar sealed one lane road, though in some patches a bit bumpy due to the peat soil road base, passing by many villages. From the Ferry Point to Sadong Jaya, the distant is merely a 40 km journey. On the eve (late afternoon) Aidil Fitri, I saw one Kancil plunged into the side drain. I figured out, the driver must have been too tired making a day-night long final preparation for the Aidil Fitri. On the Aidil Fitri itself, again I saw a bike jumped into the side drain. From the mark left on the road, the bike seems to make a fast swing, that probably made the rider out of control. On the second day of Aidil Fitri, again another Proton Saga dipped into the side drain. This time, as I have been observing, the price must had been made by young excited driver.

(2) On the third Aidil Fitri, as I was sending some friends back to Kuching, again a motorcyclist landed flat on the road due to self accident. He, a young fellow, who was dressed in nice maroon Baju-Seluar Melayu with Samping, probably was very lucky didn’t make it to the drain. And surely, probably just being ‘accident sakai’, every passerby seems to slow down that made a long unnecessary queue.

(3) Deep in my heart and mind, Aidil Fitri is a day whereby the Moslem would celebrate their success in fulfilling the requirement of the fourth pillars of Islam ie a one full month of fasting. Aidil Fitri is sort of a day of joy, a day of fulfilment, a day of accomplishment, a day that Moslem congregate and renewed their brotherhood together, a day of success to oneself determination in his fight against all those normal unhealthy and immoral deeds: greed, hatred, prejudice, stingy, and self-centric. Nonetheless, despite all those great preaching and advice being sermon in the Suraus and Masjids, as well as in Radios and Television, little seem to make our brothers to realise and learnt. What a sad Aidil Fitri to those families, whom their members were involved in such an unnecessary accident. That was just a 40 KM rural road, but what about the hundreds of thousands of KM Federal and State Highways nationwide?

(4) In my pre-Aidil Fitri message, I used to asked: Siapa Raya, Siapa Kaya, Siapa Berhutang; and now I would like to add: Siapa Berdukacita?

(5) Actually, as we travel state-wide (in Sarawak) or even the whole country, I have been observing that our drivers seem to lack traffic etiquette. Everybody seems wanting to rush to where they tend to reach, very few are considered very considerate. At last, everybody seem to be stuck ended to nowhere, except probably later being unconscious in the ICU.

(6) I’m wondering what make us such reckless (or restless) drivers. The most discipline drivers (vis Singaporean), also tend to change their attitude when driving on our roads. All these, I believe must be due to the norm set in Theory of Action and Reaction or the Brownian Theory in Physic. Once hit, one will (must) hit back equally of the same force. Or as Darwin had said, in his Theory of the Fittest: one had to evolve (act and react) to survive, or one may be defeated and perish.

(7) Definitely there are much more reasoning and excuses: bad road, young and inexperienced drivers, poor enforcement, born devil drivers, etc could be voiced out on this issue, but let the fact remain a fact: our people must have good knowledge and really practice of Traffic Etiquette. I believe our people simply are lacking in the Traffic Etiquette. Ask ourselves few simple questions:

(a) What should we be doing when we want to overtake, at night and during the day time? Also what should be our attitude when someone want to overtake? Didn't most would 'buat dek: who care!'

(b) After overtake, what then we should be doing especially when we are travelling on more than one lane road?

(c) On which lane should we overtake, left, right, middle or where? ZigZag would be great may be?

(d) On which lane should we be driving slow and or fast? Do we know that driving slow, and not heeding to the incoming vehicle, on the right lane is a Traffic Offence? Who care? Why in a rush?

(e) Who has the First Right to move, the vehicle on the right or left? What should be in our mind, upon seeing a vehicle that need to crossover but need to face long queue of incoming traffics: make way for some to cross, or just move on without feeling sorry for not trying to give a hand? Well, who care? None of our business?

(f) What is a Zebra Crossing? Well dame who care, there is no zebra in this Country. This is not Africa? Surely there are many more signages that we just don’t bother!

(8) One thing very peculiar about our people, they seem to be ‘ accident sakai’, when there is an accident, everybody seem want to slow down to get a good look at what is happening. They never bother to look into their rear mirror to check how much congestion had he/she made. Basically, the civic minded is not there. It is reasonable for those who want to help to stop and lend their hands, but most, probably just wanting to know what is the vehicle plate number to score for a 4-D! That is bad in fact! To me this is merely a ‘wrong timing and place of curiosity’.

(9) Year in year out, there is that Campaign: Operasi SAPU, with such name (SAPU) surely the lives of our reckless and worst those of the most discipline were the one that we sapu: sweep out, rather achieving the Zero Life Lost Effort!

(10) I would love to hear and see our Television and Radios which seem to love to view all sort of beautiful songs and joke or whatever advertisements, probably should innovatively keep re-educating our drivers on the Traffic and Road Etiquette. Our JPJ, Police and even the Schools should play greater role to make this country Driving Safe Heaven.

(11) As matured and probably educated people, let us set good deed by having great Civic Minded. In fact all these unnecessary hiccups that we are facing could be resolved if we have strong Civic Minded, be mindful of others, care about others, be caring in whatever meant that we can.
